Tour of homes from
the 1920 and 30's reveals a little about the way Pompano
Beach used to be before there was a beach. Pompano was a
center of a farming community.
The Pompano Beach Civic Association
made History with a tour of eight historic properties that
was open to the public on March 24, 2001. Five of the Pompano
Beach Civic association members open their homes to the
public on that date. The Pompano Beach Historic Association,
which owns and operates the Kester cottages and the 555
Society, which operates the Firehouse Museum, agreed to
participate. The First United Methodist Association which
has begun the process to place its chapel on the Federal
Register of Historic Places also participated.
The
tour started at the (1) Kester Cottages
in Founders Park, next to the (2) Firehouse
Museum. The city's first firehouse built in 1926. It
has 2 fire trucks. The original used until 1948 and the
second used until the 70's. The next property was the home
located at 300 NE 4 Ave, known as (3) The
"Cap Campbell" House Circa 1910. The current
owners Allan and Doris Price were very gracious to open
the public to their home. From this property we went to
a (4) The "Bo Giddens House"
Circa 1939 located at 305 NE 3rd Street. The owner J. Kimball
was a nice host giving every body a tour of her home. She
has done a terrific job restoring her property.
From
this beautiful home we went to the (5) Methodist
Church Chapel of Pompano Beach built in 1983 and 1939,
this is afine example of Gothic architecture. The chapel
is the oldest church building in Pompano Beach. On to the
next home located at 400 NE Fifth Ave is (6) The
"Wallace Robinson House" Circa 1920's, is
an example of Moorish revival architecture, which had a
short-lived life span in the history of South Florida. This
home had a 3 car garage and stables.
On
to next property located at 410 NE Fifth Ave is (7) The
"Austin House" Circa 1924. This is a Bungalow
style 2 story house built of Dade County pine and then to
the last home on the tour (8) "The
Horace Robinson House" located at 405 NE Fifth
Ave. Built of Dade County pine in 1924 hold many surprises.
It is the birthplace of Broward County's first symphony
Society and the Opera Guild. At First a rather modest house,
it was by the Robinson's during
the 1930's to include a music room with a giant five stop
German Votteler pipe organ, a billiard room, a library,
a third bedroom and a 3 bathroom. This home is own by Lisa
and Scott Allen.
